Falcons Release Steven Jackson
He gone!
Veteran half back Steven Jackson has been released by the Atlanta Falcons. The moves gives Atlanta an additional 3.75 million. Jackson was entering the final season of his 3 year, 12 million dollar deal signed two seasons ago.
The move is hardly a surprise based off of on the field production and schematic changes. New offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan implements the zone running scheme predicated on quick one cut runs. Jackson who will turn 32 in July likely cannot handle the riggers of such rugged movements. The Falcons have plenty of other options including Jacquizz Rodgers, Antone Smith, and Devonte Freeman. Atlanta is also reportedly interested in Ravens runningback Justin Forsett who ran the Kubiak zone run scheme in Baltimore.
Jackson’s future remains unclear. With 2,743 career carries, there cannot be much tread left of those tires. I expect him to seriously consider retirement this offseason. The former first round pick from Oregon State sits 16th on the all time rushing list.
