When I saw this news yesterday I was thinking in my head. How do NBA negotiations go? I mean if they’re on the same wavelength do they just ring each other up and set a date to put pen onto paper? Do they do the cliché ‘sit down’ and iron out all the facts?
And how isn’t a deal like this, between a father and son, not weird? Doc Rivers Is the GM, so he’s pretty much giving his son Austin Rivers an allowance on the condition that he plays basketball at a professional level “Alright I’ll give you this $6.4 Million, don’t spend it all at once”.
Just weird isn’t it? I’m sure it’s a bit more professional than that but you could imagine it happening like that.
Now when it comes to his actual contract, you might have had in your mind that Rivers took a ‘family discount’. Which is fair to expect but in this case you would be wrong as a league executive says the deal is the going rate.
Rivers’ deal is comparable to what he would have likely seen in terms of annual salary if he signed with another team, one league executive texted to CSNNE.com on Sunday.
“No family discount on that deal,” read the text. “That’s about his going rate right now.”
I think just over $3 Million a year is alright, considering the cap is going to skyrocket you’re going to see this deal as a complete bargain. And who knows, maybe Rivers will be consistently good in a couple of years. Maybe.
