Errol Spence Jr. has officially withdrawn from his title fight against Manny Pacquiao. Spence Jr. has cited a torn retina as the driving force behind his withdrawal. ESPN’s Mike Coppinger first reported the news on Tuesday afternoon.
“Errol Spence Jr. has a torn retina in his left eye and has withdrawn from his Aug. 21 welterweight title fight with Manny Pacquiao,” he tweeted.
Instead, Pacquiao will fight WBA Welterweight Champion Yordenis Ugas on August 21 in Las Vegas, Nevada. While excited for the opportunity to fight Pacquiao, Ugas took time to wish Spence Jr. a speedy recovery.
“Praying for him and I hope he recovers soon,” he tweeted.
“I pray for a full and complete recovery for Errol Spence Jr.,” Pacquiao added.
There is no word as to how long Spence Jr.’s recovery will take and when he may return to the ring.
