Derrick James has a chance to win Trainer of the Year honors yet again. During the second half of the year, he will help Frank Martin, Ryan Garcia and Anthony Joshua continue their quest for a world title. Also, he will guide Jermell Charlo as he looks to take down undisputed super middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez. However, there is one fight that stands above all others on the calendar this year. On Saturday, July 29, James will join Spence Jr. as he enters the ring and fights Terence Crawford. During a recent interview with Boxing Scene, James shared what he believes will be the keys to beating Crawford.
“The key for Errol is to know who he is and never really go outside of what we really want to do. To win, we have to chop, chop, chop him down. That’s the key element. Keep breaking [Crawford] down. That’s all I want him to do,” James told Boxing Scene.
“Errol needs to be the best version of himself. Go out there, and stay focused. The winner of the fight needs to have fortitude. You’ll see a fighter get pushed.”
Spence Jr. has shared similar sentiments. In his words, his upcoming bout with Crawford will be a war.
“It’s going to be a war. I got a message for the fans. Everybody, make sure you guys tune in for this fight. It’s going to be an amazing, legendary fight. You have seen fights like Ali-Joe Frazier, Ray Leonard-Hearns, Duran-Hearns, Duran-Ray Leonard, all those types of fights,” Spence Jr. said.
“You definitely want to tune in to this fight. This fight is going to be a war. It’s going to be a war of attrition. This is a fight that you definitely want to see if you’re an ex-fan, a fan now, or you’re just a casual.”
