Gordon now has no problem with making New Orleans his home.
Eric Gordon was more than prepared to be a member of the Phoenix Suns when he signed his offer sheet in 2012. The Pelicans (who were the Hornets at that time) chose to match Phoenix’s offer for Gordon, even though he asked them not to.
Gordon has gone through a myriad of injuries in the last few years, setting back his expectation as one of the top upcoming young guards in the league. He’s been healthy as of late, and with the help of one Anthony Davis, the Pelicans have united in a completely realistic pursuit of a playoff appearance.
Admitting he’s more mature, Gordon acknowledged for the first time this week that he should have handled things differently than he did three years ago. When asked if he wished he could take back saying Phoenix was where his heart was, Gordon said, “For sure.”
”It was business, a tour for them to use and for me you know I got this contract because of them,” said Gordon, who has a year remaining on his current contract and is not likely to opt out this summer to explore free agency. ”That was the thing, but I’ve always believed in myself.”
Set to make $15.5 million next season, Gordon will be paid arguably much more than he deserves based on his durability. Opting in with the Pelicans comes as a no-brainer being that his stock isn’t at a point for teams to come bidding for his services. Plus, as Gordon rejuvenates, he can stick with Anthony Davis in the meantime. That’s not a bad place to be.
