UPDATE (5/20/17): Enes Kanter has been released from the airport and is currently on a flight to London, according to the New York Times.
The following is the original Def Pen story:
Enes Kanter, in a personal video sent out to Twitter, states that he has been held in a Romanian airport after finding out that his passport has been canceled. Kanter is of Turkish descent and appears to have been denied access because of his political views.
He is firmly against the current regime in Turkey. Recep Tayyip Erdogan or as Kanter calls him in the video, the “Hitler of our century” is the leader currently in power. Erdogan’s name may sound familiar because he recently visited Donald Trump in the White House while his men then proceeded to attack protesters nearby.
Kanter’s negative attitude toward his rule has cost him more than a passport. His family has actually disowned him for going against Erdogan as they still live in Turkey. In the video, Kanter seems positive even though he explains why and for how long he has been detained at the airport. To add another bizarre twist to this story, today is Kanter’s 25th birthday.
