Actress Emma Mackey will be looking to take her acting career in a new direction. Earlier this week, the actress told Radio Times that she would likely not return for season five of Sex Education.
“Season 5? I’ve just finished the fourth one last week,” Mackey said.
“No, I don’t think I’ll be in season 5. I’ve said goodbye to Maeve.”
Mackey’s comments do not come as a surprise. Previously, she indicated that her character, Maeve, would not be around as much throughout season four.
“It feels very familiar! And it’s a bit more sporadic because we have more characters. So there’s…I’m not in it as consistently,” she said about season four, per Deadline.
“But we’re in the middle of filming now, and I’m excited to be back. And yeah, I’m intrigued to know what’s going to happen – because I also don’t know. I’m also finding out as we go along, so it’ll be fun!”
Mackey is far from the only actor to step away from the series. Previously, Simone Ashley, Tanya Reynolds, Rakhee Thakrar and Patricia Allison said they would not appear in season four. More recently, Ncuti Gatwa said that he would not return for season five either.
“Last day. Last time. Bye bubs, thank you for all the lessons and for all the strength,” he wrote on Instagram.
At this time, it is unclear when Netflix will unveil season four of Sex Education or what direction it will take.
