Emeka Okafor is 32 and still a worthy player. The last time we saw Okafor was when he played for Washington averaging a solid 9.7 PPG and 8.8 RPG. Then he was sent off to the Suns in exchange for Marcin Gortat. And how good a deal was that?
Okafor didn’t play for the Suns. But now he’s a free agent and is attracting interest. But according to Marc Stein of ESPN.com, he might wait for the 2015-16 season to come along and then make himself available.
Emeka Okafor, who is being tracked by numerous teams in search of frontcourt help, is giving strong consideration to delaying his comeback from a neck injury until next season, according to league sources.
Sources told ESPN.com that Okafor, who missed all of last season after suffering a herniated disk in his neck, is leaning toward waiting until the summer before committing to a new team to give himself more time to continue strength and conditioning work.
Okafor, 32, is “healthy,” according to one source, but is reluctant to rush back this season.
Sources say that numerous teams with a need for additional size and rim protection — Cleveland, Miami and Dallas among them.
As we know. Cleveland are desperate for a big man. Varejao is injured and Kevin Love is a defensive liability. Miami have big men but they could always do with some bench players. And Dallas also need a big man. Considering that Tyson Chandler isn’t the best in terms of stamina.
They all need Okafor. But if Okafor wants more time, he’s got all the right to do that. Okafor will be a good asset for whoever signs him. Everybody likes that veteran leadership, that player that can come off the bench and grab a few boards.
