On Saturday, July 12, 2025, Brooklynite and highly-touted super middleweight contender Edgar Berlanga will fight in his hometown of New York City for the first time in nearly 18 months. The one-time super middleweight title challenger will have his hands full as he battles unbeaten super middleweight Hamzah Sheeraz in front of his fellow New Yorkers at Louis Armstrong Stadium. Just days ahead of the big fight, Berlanga is a slight underdog at +110, according to DraftKings. However, that’s done little to diminish his confidence ahead of the Ring III main event.
“I’m really [going to] beat [the] s—t out of Sheeraz,” he told amNY.
While Berlanga is not looking past Sheeraz, he does have a long-term plan. The New York native has repeatedly mentioned that he’d like to fight Saul Canelo Alvarez a second time. In order to get there, he must get by many of the former champions and contenders occupying the super middleweight division. Speaking to the ring, he mentioned one former champion that he has eye set on for later this year.
“If Jermall is there, we can fight him in December,” he told The Ring. “I wanna finish this year with a bang after I scrape this dude.”
Jermall Charlo recently dispatched of Thomas LaManna in a one-sided outing. Charlo was originally thought to be setting the stage for a showdown with former super middleweight champion Caleb Plant, but those plans were derailed when Charlo’s potential foe suffered his first loss in more than two years. Now, Berlanga could emerge as a potential foe for Charlo.
