Tyson Fury experienced a major setback when he tested positive for COVID-19 prior to his third title fight against Deontay Wilder. As a result, the third fight in their trilogy will be pushed from July 24 to early October. If Fury is able to emerge with a win in October, the heavyweight champion could look to fight Anthony Joshua. Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn believes that fight could take place early next year if Joshua is able to defend his titles against Oleksandr Usyk on September 25.
“I think that was pretty much the case anyway. But fighting September 25, it’s very difficult to do a fight in December. And a lot of our conversations now about the undisputed fight are end of January, February,” Hearn said.
“So it probably helps [that Fury-Wilder was postponed]. Fury might’ve wanted to do another fight in November or December. And then the whole thing is, like, never-ending.”
Fury and Joshua were scheduled to fight this summer in Saudia Arabia. However, the fight was derailed when an arbitrator ruled that Fury must give Wilder a chance to regain the title he lost in February 2020 to Fury. More details regarding their third fight are expected to arrive as Fury recovers from COVID-19.
