Deadpool villain Ed Skrein is set to continue the trend and play a villain in the upcoming sequel to Disney’s live-action Maleficent.
Angelina played the titular role and is set to return alongside Elle Fanning. Joachim Ronning will handle directorial duties this time around. Ronning directed last year’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.
Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue wrote the most recent draft of the script and Linda Woolverton is returning to re-write with Jez Butterworth. Joe Roth will produce.
Plot details are light, this will likely be an original story as the first film was based on the fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty. Making over $750 million worldwide, Maleficent was a huge success, breaking several box office records.
The specifics of Skrein’s role in the film are still unknown.
Skrein’s break out role was starring opposite Ryan Reynolds in 2016’s Deadpool. He is set to star next in Robert Rodriguez’s Alita: Battle Angel, produced by James Cameron. He will also appear in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk.
Production on the sequel is set to start later this year with no release date set yet.
