Earl Sweatshirt brings in the new year with this demonic, house-shattering banger, “Mirror.” If this is any indication of what’s to come from Earl, then I am all in. Seems like parting with Odd Future has lit a major fire under this young man, and this menacing record is the correct way to introduce everyone to the new Earl Sweatshirt. I’ve already played this track four times since seeing it, and it’ll probably get played another 40 times by the day’s end.
What’s more, “Mirror” was suppose to be on I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside, but didn’t make the sample clearance in time he tells Pitchfork in an interview from April 2015.
“Grief” could’ve been the last song on the album. What’s fucked, though, is that the tracklist got fucked up. There was a song that’s so crucial for the balance of the album called “Mirror” that was supposed to come right after “Faucet”; as far as the mom dynamic thing goes, the juxtaposition of “Mirror” against “Faucet” was so crucial, but the fucking sample didn’t get cleared. I’m gonna put it out, though.
