For more than 20 years, Electronic Arts Sports has captured the imagination of gamers around the world while providing a unique platform to the best athletes on planet earth. Each year, the brand’s leading property, Madden NFL, highlights the world’s most prominent football players. In years past, Michael Vick, Ray Lewis and countless others have taken the baton and run with it. Now, a new face will grace the cover and join that exclusive fraternity.
In a fitting tribute to the legendary coach, John Madden will cover this year’s Madden NFL video game. The longtime NFL pioneer won a Super Bowl title, AFL title and Coach of the Year in 1969. After putting together a strong career in pro football, Madden moved the broadcast booth. For more than 30 years, Madden called sporting events for CBS Sports, NBC Sports, ABC Sports and FOX. Most importantly, he helped power the creation of his namesake video game, Madden NFL. After 25 years, the video game franchise has reportedly pulled in more than $4 billion.
EA Sports’ latest Madden NFL cover shifts from last year’s rollout. Nearly a year ago, Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady covered two different versions of the game. As two of the most popular quarterbacks in the league, Mahomes and Brady defied the “Madden Curse” by breaking into the postseason. Mahomes led the Chiefs to an AFC West title and an AFC Championship appearance. Elsewhere, Brady and company won the NFC South and defeated the Philadelphia Eagles during the first round of the 2022 NFL Playoffs.
