Guard Dwyane Wade looked happy as can be last season when he returned back to the Miami Heat. But playing another season? That appears to still be up in the air.
“In due time,” Wade said during a conference call, via ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk. “Time will tell.” After being traded back to Miami last season, Wade said that he would not be changing teams again. If the Heat did want him back, he would likely retire. Wade was reportedly offered a lucrative contract from a Chinese basketball team, likely much more money than what he would offered by the Heat. But a move that far away would be a difficult move for his family.
“My son is a junior in high school right now,” Wade said of his 16-year old son Zaire. “Every decision at this point, especially in a professional athlete’s career, at 36 years old, a lot of it surrounds around their families and what is best for their family. So I am really invested into making sure that my sons can have every tool that they need to be able to succeed at this game of basketball and game of life.”
The news of Dwyane Wade being unsure of playing more years is not a new revelation either. He was noncommittal about playing this upcoming season back in February.
Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press says the Heat are in no rush for Wade to make his decision. Team President Pat Riley is being patient with the Heat legend.
“I think it’s best that we give him some more time,” Riley said. “I want him back as a player.” I want him back as a competitor. I want him back as a guy who wants to have the greatest year he ever had as a player. I read more articles about ‘Dwyane being done, he’s lost a step, he’s not the same player, he might not have the same motivation.’ But I still see a player who can contribute heavily if he really wants to.”
