Dwight Howard will be a free agent this summer, but how much money he’s worth is a major question mark. Basically, he’s probably going to get a lot of money from some team, but most other teams likely wouldn’t give him that much. Whichever team he goes to, he’ll probably fill a need –teams like Portland, Charlotte, or perhaps…Dallas.
The Mavericks could use a center. As things stand currently, their starter is Zaza Paculia or Salah Mejri. So, yeah, they wouldn’t mind an upgrade. Howard is their first choice, according to Dwain Price of the Star-Telegram:
At the top of the Mavericks’ wish list this year is Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard, who plans to opt out of the final year of his contract and become a free agent this summer. Howard, it would seem, has absolutely everything the Mavericks need from a center.
Howard, obviously, isn’t what he once was. He’s still an effective big man down low, though. He would fill the role that Tyson Chandler once had in Dallas. Howard is still a terrific defensive presence in the paint, and still has some of the athleticism of his prime.
This season for the Rockets, Howard averaged 13.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, and a steal per game, while shooting 62% from the field.
Price pointed to Hassan Whiteside, Pau Gasol, Nicolas Batum, Mike Conley, Ryan Anderson, and Kent Bazemore as other free agents Dallas may pursue.
