I swear we get a story like this every year. Where a player feels good and says they can play for another X years. Most of the time it’s 30+ year old’s who are looking upon retirement but says they can go for another couple of years. Dirk Nowitzki has been doing it for years, Kobe of course has talked about his tank and how much he’s got left. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, there are many examples.
But you rarely get it from somebody that isn’t even 30 yet. Dwight Howard isn’t 30 yet but for some reason he says that he can go for another 10 years.
“Y’all acting like I’m about to retire,” Howard said. “I mean, I feel good. I’m 29 years old regardless of me being in the league for 12 years, I’m fairly young. I got about a good 10 years left in me. I’m going to give everything I got for these 10, 11 years I got left.”
Why are people questioning his longevity? Sure he didn’t even play 50 games last season, yes he’s had injuries. But let’s hold up for a second, he still gets it done when he’s on the court. He’s not Tim Duncan!
And for the 10 years, that means he’ll replace Robert Parish and Kevin Willis on the All-Time list for most seasons played, 21. I can’t see that, if he said 5-10 years, I’d agree. He won’t make it to 10 I think, his play isn’t sustainable for another 10 years.
