Alex O’Connell announced Saturday afternoon that he is transferring from Duke after three years with the program, per his Twitter account.
O’Connell has spent his time in Durham primarily as a role player off the bench, acting as a shooting specialist. His playing time has been up-and-down throughout, with his performances also showing a rollercoaster of results. The 6’6 guard averaged 4.3 PPG in 12.5 MPG during his time at Duke. He becomes the 2nd Duke departure announced in the last 24 hours.

A four-star recruit out of Georgia, O’Connell came to Duke with hopes of eventually growing into a prime contributor. The shooting guard was ranked 68th in the class of 2017 via 247Sports Composite Rankings.
His playing time began to dip off towards the end of the 2019-20 season, and his name has been tossed around as a transfer candidate since. O’Connell played in the fewest amount of games of any of his three seasons in Durham. He appeared in 29 games, as opposed to 36 games in the prior two seasons. Per Sam Vecenie, there is no indication that O’Connell is a graduate transfer. Thus, he may have to sit a year before being eligible to play at his new school.
