Winslow is the second Duke freshman to declare.
Duke University freshman standout Justise Winslow has officially declared for the 2015 NBA Draft. Winslow was expected to declare this week after his teammate and fellow freshman Jahlil Okafor made his official announcement.
Winslow made his announcement via The Herald-Sun‘s Steve Wiseman, who provided Winslow’s comments on his decision:
This year at Duke University, my dreams and aspirations have literally come true. Since I was a kid in third grade playing for the Houston Jaguars, I envisioned one day playing at the collegiate level and winning a championship. If you fast forward 10 years and my dream became a reality. The friendships and relationships I’ve formed with those a part of the Duke and Durham community have been even better than winning the National Championship. With that being said, my family and I have decided that I should declare for the NBA draft this year. Considering the success and growth that I have experienced over this past year as a player and as a person, I believe it is time to take the next step on my career path and play at the highest level.
A statement from Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski:
We’re very happy for Justise and his family. He had a sensational year, both on and off the court. He was an amazing factor for our success in winning the national championship. From everything we have found out, Justise is projected to be a high lottery pick and we believe that to be true. This is a great time to take advantage of this opportunity. We’re behind him all the way and love him and his family.
Winslow averaged over 12 points and 6 rebounds for the national champion Blue Devils this season, showcasing his versatility and value throughout, but probably none more than in the NCAA Tournament. Winslow performed fluently in big moments, doing for 21 points and 10 rebounds against Utah in the Sweet 16 and 19 points and 9 rebounds against Michigan State in the Final Four.
NBADraft.net currently has Winslow projected as the no. 5 overall pick to the Orlando Magic. They have his NBA comparisons as James Harden and Wilson Chandler.
Winslow’s stock absolutely boosted during the tournament where he made the leap from a probably first-rounder to a potential lottery pick. Winslow may or may not be joined by his other freshman teammate Tyus Jones, who has not yet declared.
