Drumma Boy has been hard at work, continuing add to his list of great tracks. This summer will be no different with work for Young Jeezy‘s TM103, Drake‘s Thank Me Later, and T.I.‘s King Uncaged on the way.
On street dealing with Jeezy:
“With Jeezy, it’s funny because when it comes to the music, I already know what he wants. We’ve never actually worked in the studio together. The first time I ever heard “Put On” was on the radio. [Laughs] Just the other day, he called me as soon as I woke up. First call of the day. He was like, ‘Where you at? I need to get some more music.’ I’ll give him the intersection I’m at and he’ll just ride down right then, pick up a beat CD and keep it moving. It’s like a real dope deal. I really got crack! [Laughs] All our joints come that way. Even with “Lose My Mind,” I didn’t hear that until we mixed it. So I can’t tell you exactly what I’ve got on there yet, but in addition to “Lose My Mind,” I’m gonna have two of three other joints on the album.”
On working with Drake:
“In 2008, somebody called me and said, ‘I got an artist I want you to work with.’ I forget who it even was. But they passed my number along and Drake reached out to me and asked me to come to Hot Beats [Recording Studios] in Atlanta. The first studio session we recorded “Money To Blow.” [Editor’s Note: That track was later used to create Birdman’s 2009 single of the same name.] Anyway, I always see him out at certain events, so he reached out [a couple months ago] like, ‘Yo man, send me some beats. I’m about to close this album.’ So I did and he just sent me a text out of the blue the other day like, ‘We got another one!’ I responded like, ‘Yo, email it to me, let me hear it,’ but I got no response. So I guess we’ll have to take his word for it. [Laughs]”
Working with T.I.:
“The first time I ever really worked with him was in his house right after he got out of jail [and was on house arrest in 2008]. I was one of the first visitors that came through his house. I played 30 beats for him and he kept 25. That’s why I was four tracks deep on Paper Trail. He’s just now getting back into his mode [after being released from prison in March] and he’s really going hard on the album. I’ve done two or three tracks for him so far. I’ve only heard one but DJ MLK, one of Tip’s DJs, talked to me the other night and told me how crazy this other record [he did over my beat] was. So stay tuned.”
