AS: What’s good, Drake? We’re happy you chose Def Pen Radio to premiere your new project. Can you tell people about the project and what it means to you?
DM: Man everything is good, bro. Excited about this release. Well this is my debut album and I am completely independent. That means complete creative freedom to me. The fact that I don’t have a label breathing down my neck giving me deadlines and things of that nature, left a lot of room to play around. “Feel Better” was created and released completely in-house and independently. I did everything from the production, writing, live instrumentation and engineering to the mixing and mastering on the album, so this is my baby and what you get is the raw “me.”
AS: For those who aren’t familiar with your music, how would you describe it?
DM: I am very eclectic with my sound so this is always a hard question to answer. I just say it’s “feel good” music on this album. I grew up listening to live music with heavy instrumentation so I incorporated a lot of that on the album.
AS: If you had to pick one or a couple tracks from the project as your favorites, what would they be?
DM: Hands down, “It’s Ok” is my favorite song on the album. I’m not saying that it is my best work on the album by any means, but that song makes me feel great. I’ve honestly listened to that song over one thousand times and it is still not old to me. A very close second is “To The Floor” because of the musicianship that my dad, Dr. Paul Murphy, brought to the table by way of the saxophone and piano. He is playing on “Good Girl” also along with my uncle Bobby Murphy on the trumpet, so that one ties in at second too haha. I know there is a bit of nepotism with those choices, but who cares? They are great songs. lol If I had to choose the one song on “Feel Better” that means the most to me, it would be “Simple Things.” I’ll just leave that there haha.
AS: Where can people find Drake Murphy on the internet?
DM: You can definitely check me out on my site Drakemurphy.com, Twitter – @BirthNameDrake, Instagram – @BirthNameDrake
Facebook – Facebook.com/birthnamedrake, SoundCloud – BirthNameDrake — haha everything is @BirthNameDrake.
AS: What can we expect in the near future from you?
DM: You can expect an experience from me. I will deliver quality music every time. Alex, if I don’t deliver quality, I am sure you will be one of the first people to tell me to go back to the studio and fix it haha. All-in-all, I hate garbage music so I won’t give
you any of that.
AS: Thanks for your time, Drake!
DM: No doubt, the pleasure is all mine.
