In attendance at this year’s ceremony, Drake took the stage at the Microsoft Theater to accept the fourth Grammy Award of his career for “Best Rap Song“. While delivering his acceptance speech, Drake made a number of poignant comments. Drake noted, “If there’s people who have regular jobs, who are coming out in the rain and the snow, spending hard earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, you don’t need this right here.” Drake added, “You already won.” From there, Drake appeared to be making another set off comments, but he was cut off prematurely.

In response to Drake being cut off, many began to speculate as to why. In an attempt to avoid any controversy, The Recording Academy’s PR representatives issued a statement. Michael Samonte of the Sunshine Sachs PR firm stated, “During Drake’s speech, there was a natural pause and at that moment the producers did assume that he was done and then cut to commercial.” Samonte added, “However, the producers did speak with Drake following his speech and did offer him to come back on stage to finish whatever his thoughts were. But Drake said he was happy with what he said and didn’t have anything to add.”
