Don Lemon has found himself in hot water at CNN.
One week ago, Lemon and his colleagues at CNN were discussing the ages of potential presidential nominees during an episode of CNN This Morning. As the conversation progressed, Lemon and his co-hosts spoke about former governor Nikki Haley.
“Nikki Haley isn’t in her prime, sorry,” he said as he explained why he was “uncomfortable” discussing the ages of potential presidential nominees.
“When a woman is considered to be in her prime — in her 20s, 30s and maybe her 40s.”
In response, Lemons’ co-host Poppy Harlow challenged him to clarify his comments further.
“I think we need to qualify. Are you talking about prime for childbearing or are you talking about prime for being president?” Harlow asked.
“Don’t shoot the messenger, I’m just saying what the facts are,” Lemon replied.
Afterward, Lemon was reportedly asked to step away from the morning show and meet with executives within the company.
“I sat down with Don and had a frank and meaningful conversation,” CNN CEO Chris Licht wrote in a memo.
“He has agreed to participate in formal training, as well as continuing to listen and learn. We take this situation very seriously.”
In addition to Licht’s memo, Lemon issued a statement on-air and on social media.
“I appreciate this opportunity to be back on CNN This Morning today,” Don Lemon wrote.
“To my network, my colleagues and our incredible audience — I’m sorry. I’ve heard you. I’m learning from you, and I’m committed to doing better. See you soon.”
