Doja Cat can add another award to her growing trophy collection. The chart-topping star walked away with “Songwriter of the Year” honors at this year’s BMI Pop Awards. Working alongside co-writers like Jidenna, Sully, Jasper Harris, Y2K, Rogét Chahayed and Yeti Beats, she crafted some of the year’s biggest hits, including “Woman,” “Vegas” and “Get Into It.”
Doja Cat claims “Songwriter of the Year” honors at an interesting point in her career. The award-winning act has been pushing for a pivot away from making pop records. Also, she issued a tweet in which she referred to her past two albums as cash grabs.
“Planet Her and Hot Pink were cash grabs and y’all fell for it. Now, I can go disappear somewhere and touch grass with my loved ones on an island while y’all weep for mediocre pop,” she tweeted.
Quickly, her tweet drew reactions from her fans and critics. Some felt that she was simply joking while others took her at her word.
“There’s something very corny about her insulting the tastes of the fans who contributed to her breakthrough simply because she’s now inspired to do something different. She coulda skipped all this weird projection and just recorded the Fem-F Doom album she wants to make so bad,” City College of New York Professor Austin Williams tweeted.
“A lot of people are dragging Doja for this, but I feel like that’s 1) overlooking the particularly abusive nature of her label, and 2) ignoring that she’s clearly always been a weird alt girl whose done pop really well, for sure, but under duress,” Cave Canem Fellow Natasha Oladokun commented.
While fans and critics debate her most recent statement, she has also clarified the title of her forthcoming album. The rap-focused project is tentatively called First of All, but it doesn’t have a release date just yet.
