Last month, it was reported that the Los Angeles Clippers would be “considering” starting newcomer Wesley Johnson this upcoming season. Johnson signed with the Clippers as a free agent from the Lakers this offseason.
A month later, head coach Doc Rivers still appears fond of the idea, from Grantland’s Zach Lowe:
Just had a long sit down w Doc Rivers. He’s still undecided, but seems to be leaning to starting Wes Johnson.

Another option for Rivers, and perhaps the more assumed one, would be starting veteran Paul Pierce at small forward, who also just signed with the Clippers over the summer. But Pierce will be 38 this year, and the Clippers have more than enough talent to utilize the veteran as a timely role player.
Matt Barnes is the only missing piece from the Clippers’ starting unit from last season. Barnes played his role well as an active runner, scrapper, and floor spacer, and Johnson has the capability to fill his shoes. Johnson is younger with more athleticism and quickness. He might be most needed on the defensive end, though, where the Clippers could use a dedicated and spry wing defender.
Throughout the season we’ll probably see Rivers do some experimenting based on chemistry or health. Another option would be a three-guard set with Lance Stephenson accompanying Chris Paul and J.J. Redick, but we know that Rivers prefers Stephenson to come off the bench. At whatever capacity, for Pierce, Stephenson, and Wesley Johnson, there’s enough opportunities to help this team reach their much-desired championship plateau.
