Los Angeles Clippers head coach Doc Rivers does not believe that there is a gap between the Clippers and any other elite NBA teams. From ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne:
“I think we can play with anybody, and we don’t feel like there’s a gap,” Rivers said of the prospect of challenging the Warriors this season. “That’s all we have to prove, and I think everyone has to prove that.
“I know history very well in this league, and there’s been a lot of superteams put together, quote-unquote, superteams, and I know the history. I feel comfortable where we’re at.”
Rivers’ confidence is impressive. Rivers is right that the NBA has had many superteams — he coached one of them in Boston. However, this Warriors’ team is — in terms of sheer talent — beyond any superteam seen before.
Rivers is currently coaching one of the NBA’s elite teams in the Clippers. They are certainly a top-five team, and it can be argued that there is no major gap between any teams considered “better” than them (like the Cavaliers or Spurs)… Except for the Warriors. Frankly, there is a gap between this Golden State team and every other NBA team. They’re on their own level, in their own tier. The Clippers are a great team, but I have to disagree with Rivers on this one.
