12-time NBA All-Star, Dirk Nowitzki resigns with the Dallas Mavericks for what maybe the remainder of his career. ESPN’s Marc Stein reported on twitter:
@ESPNSteinLine: ESPN has learmed (learned) that Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks have agreed to terms on three-year deal
@ESPNSteinLine: Dirk always likely to be first major free agent to decide. Sources say sides agreed today to three-year pact believed to be in $30M ballpark
This is a dramatic pay cut for Dirk. You would figure that the 16 year career Maverick would get the max from his team but instead, Dirk is going to take about half of his $22.8 million he made last season and make about $10.4 this season coming up.
The deal, Stein also reported, contains a player option that would allow Nowitzki to return to free agency in the summer of 2016 and possibly more importantly preserves the rare no-trade clause he had in his last contract.
The future first ballot Hall of Famer and quite possibly greatest international player ever has played all 16 of his NBA seasons, earning 12 All-NBA distinctions, one NBA MVP and, notably, the 2011 championship as a member of the Mavs.
Dirk will most likely end his career as a member of the Mavericks, the next step though is who will follow suit with Dirk and play the next few seasons in Dallas.
