Two legends in Houston, J.J. Watt and Dikembe Mutumbo, share at least one thing. That finger wag.
J.J. Watt, or J.J. Swat as he’s known, takes some celebration from the former defensive player of the year. Whenever he makes a big stop on defense, whether it be swatting the pass attempt at the line of scrimmage, stopping a running play before it goes anywhere or blocking a field goal, Watt likes to break out the Finger wag, in honor of Mutumbo.
Dikembe Mutumbo has been all around recently. Earlier this month he was seen at the Brooklyn Nets game, joining English royalty at their first ever NBA game and recently he was seen a a Houston Texans game and met up with the Texans All-Pro defensive end.
Mutombo talked to Tania Ganguli of ESPN about meeting Watt:
I was just telling him that he’s just a copycat and I’m the original,” Mutombo said on the sideline before the game. “… I cannot pass all of my recipe to him. I want him to pay some royalty for using my finger wag.”
So was it a business meeting?
“No, we have not discussed price yet,” Mutombo said. “But we need to sit down and talk about it.”
“To know that the legacy is still going on, I think it brings so much joy to my heart,” Mutombo said. “… He’s having fun out here defensively. He’s letting the world know, ‘Listen, I’m here to play football, I’m happy, I’m doing what Mutombo used to do.’ That’s what life is about.”
Its just great to see a man who was once the most feared shot blocker in all of the NBA still getting honored today and not even in the basketball world. A football player is honoring his legacy on the gridiron.
