Former University of Maryland star Dez Wells has received an invite to training camp from the Washington Wizards, but is expected to forgo the opportunity. There are 5 other offers for training camp invites from other NBA teams, so he will find which of those is most likely going to give him a shot to work his way into the league.
Had he not suffered an injury dislocating his thumb before playing in Summer League, he would have been one of the key players on the Wizards team. Instead of having a contract already locked up, he now has to use training camp to prove he has what it takes to play in the NBA.
There is not a roster space for Wells on the Wizards due to them already having the max number of guaranteed contracts. He has made it clear he will work his way into the NBA even if the D-League is the first stop. Wells has never had any intentions of spending time overseas.
Even though he may not be with the Wizards this season, expect him to come back to DC at some point in his career. There is no place like home.
