The Detroit Tigers enter today with a record of 46-46, but it appears the team may be giving up on a playoff chance this season. With Miguel Cabrera on the DL for another month the Detroit has it’s eye on rebuilding for the future.
According to a USA Today Sports report the Tigers could be willing to trade players such as David Price, Yoenis Cespedes, and Rajai Davis. General Manager Dave Dombrowski added to those sentiments.
“At this point, our focus is trying to win right now,” Dombrowski told USA Today. “We’re trying to do everything we can to qualify for the playoffs. Things can turn dramatically over a 10-game period. But you have to play well, at some point, on a consistent basis. We’re at a point where we have to do what’s best in our heart for the franchise.”
A player like David Price could completely revamp the trade market as Price is by far the best player available. This could have a renounced effect on Philadelphia as they would presumably receive a better package than one the Phillies may receive for Cole Hamels.
Yoenis Cespedes could also bring in a needed power bat to a contender as he is a 2x home run derby champ. Both players will be entering free agency next season so it will be interesting to see what contending teams would be willing to give up. Nevertheless a player like Price could be just enough to take a team over the top. It remains to be seen whether Detroit’s G.M. will pull the trigger on any significant deals.
“We haven’t been in this spot for a lengthy period of time,” he said. “No question, it hasn’t been in recent years.”
