When I said that Andre Drummond is in my top 3 for the ‘Most Improved Player’, we also have to account for two things. 1) Drummond is 22, he’ll get better. 2) When you win or are a candidate for the MIP, it doesn’t mean that you’ve reached your ceiling quicker than most people thought, you really think CJ McCollum and Drummond will stay like they are now?
Of course not, but the Pistons aren’t too happy at the moment with Drummond’s defence. They’re watching him being lackadaisical and they wish that he was more ruthless on D.
Drummond isn’t as good on defense as he should be, and privately, the Pistons wish he would play harder; he reaches instead of sliding his feet, leaps late for shots he has no chance of blocking and takes off-kilter angles defending the pick-and-roll.
Now with all these rebounds, some people just see the double-doubles and give Dre a pass saying he dominated the paint. But rebounds aren’t the be all and end all. Some shots do go in and that’s what Drummond has to work on. Being more preemptive and make sure all those shots miss.
