The Detroit Pistons’ offseason has officially started with a game four loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers. With the team having secured a playoff berth with a young roster, things are looking bright under head coach and general manager Stan Van Gundy.
The most important aspect of Detroit’s summer will of course be re-signing center Andre Drummond. The big-man showed his worth this season, leading the league in rebounding and doing big things on offense in a system designed to play to his strengths.
As such, Drummond is expecting a max contract this summer as a restricted free agent. And it seems that the Pistons are more than willing to give it to him.
Following from Bob Wojnowski of the Detroit News:
Much will depend on Drummond, and the Pistons’ long-term plan for him hasn’t changed. Owner Tom Gores said after the game he “absolutely” is comfortable giving Drummond a maximum contract and will discuss it this summer. It’s really the only choice.
Drummond is still only 22 years old and despite his rawness on both ends of the floor, he has already turned into one of the best big-men in the league. There is no question that the Pistons should pay him as they continue to build around him in Van Gundy’s grand scheme.
Things are looking bright for Detroit as they attempt to build off of a very promising season and playoff performance. It starts with re-signing their best player and it appears they are ready to do just that.
