If there ever was a point for one side to just stop trying, a couple of days before the draft would be the prime time for the Los Angeles Lakers to stop trying to get Karl-Anthony Towns to workout for them. It’s not going to happen and it has yet to happen with any team because Towns said he’s not working out for any team.
There’s perfect evidence to support why, especially with the recent pre-draft workout injuries to Cameron Payne, Michael Qualls and Cliff Alexander. Towns need to protect his assets, particularly his health.
Yet still, the Lakers appeared to try extensively to get Towns in for a workout and despite his denials, they have spent a chunk of the past few weeks trying to get him in. It appears now that their efforts are done and they’re just giving up on the idea of working out Towns.
Following from Mark G. Medina of the Los Angeles Daily News and Inside the Lakers.
The Lakers have also become increasingly doubtful they will have a workout for Kentucky center Karl-Anthony Towns. The Lakers believe their lack of progress with those efforts stem from most NBA mock drafts predicting the Minnesota Timberwolves will select with their No. 1 pick. But the Lakers will accommodate their workout schedule should Towns and his representatives express interest in a workout.
It should all but be a formality now that Karl-Anthony Towns will join the Timberwolves. He recently interviewed with them, his college coach at Kentucky, John Calipari, said he likes the city and Towns is undoubtedly the top prospect in this draft class.
It’ll be alright for the Lakers faithful because while they might not get Towns, another skilled big man will fall to them. Jahlil Okafor, who the Lakers are ‘locked in on’ will be right there for the Lakers second selection in the 2015 NBA Draft.
