File this under “well what is he supposed to say?”
New York Knicks point guard Derrick Rose says he will prioritize winning over money this summer as he gears up for free agency. Following via ESPN:
“Not even thinking money. I’ve got more than enough money saved. If I stopped playing basketball now, I’ll be all right,” Rose told reporters in Utah on Wednesday night. “I want to win. I want to be happy and feel at peace with myself wherever I’m at. But being at the negotiating table, you never know. I’m not going to negotiate with people where money is the No. 1 thing I’m asking for. I want to win.”
Obviously, this is something Rose has to say in order to clean his reputation ahead of free agency. He has previously mentioned that he believes he is still deserving of a max contract, an asinine claim but one that he may truly believe.
Who will give Rose the best chance of holding a job in a winning situation is a more important question to ask. Rose is not the player he once was and he’d be a downgrade from most starting point guards currently in the NBA.
Rose has previously been linked to the Milwaukee Bucks after he said he would love to play there. He could find a home in Milwaukee or elsewhere but chances are he won’t have to prioritize winning over money because he may not have the choice.
