Rose started the 2017-18 season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, averaging 9.8 points and 1.6 assists in just 16 games with the team, spending much of his tenure in Cleveland evaluating the future of his playing career while also enduring a nagging ankle injury.
Eventually, Rose was shipped to the Utah Jazz along with former teammate Jae Crowder during Cleveland’s trade deadline overhaul for sharpshooting wing Rodney Hood. Rose was promptly waived by the Jazz and signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves soon after, reuniting with former Chicago Bulls’ teammates Jimmy Butler and Taj Gibson, along with former Bulls’ head coach Tom Thibideau.
The former MVP appeared in nine games with Minnesota, playing out a pair of 10-day contracts before having his contract guaranteed for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs. Rose split backup point guard duties with third-year player Tyus Jones, and barring any unforeseen roster moves, will play a similar role with the team next season.
