On Saturday Night, the Golden State Warriors and Chicago Bulls were set to tip-off in a matchup that would play out like a normal game, against very good teams. What people didn’t expect was that Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls would wear an “I Can’t Breathe” Shirt. This shirt is symbolical to the death of Eric Garner, who died being choked and apprehended by an NYPD police officer. National protests have ensued due to both the Eric Garner issue and the story of Michael Brown in Ferguson, and Derrick Rose wanted to play his part.
According to K.C Johnson of the Chicago Tribune:
“I’m just happy that people paid attention to it,” Rose said. “I think it touched a lot of people because I grew up in an impoverished area like that. And sometimes (police brutality) happens.
“Usually I stay out of politics and police brutality. I’m not saying all cops are bad or anything. I’m just saying that what happened them days was uncalled for and I think it hurt a lot of people. It hurt the nation.”
He also mentioned:
“I think both stories are touching stories and I just wanted to show my support by wearing the shirt,” Rose said.
I feel as if Derrick Rose, did exactly what he felt was right. He stood up for a cause he believed in, and also is being very aware of his decisions. Just before the start of the season, Derrick Rose donated $1 million dollars to a Chicago charity, so you know that this really comes from the heart with Derrick Rose. It has raised so much awareness, that LeBron James will wear the same shirt tonight as the Cleveland Cavaliers face the Brooklyn Nets. A movement is being started, thanks to Derrick Rose.
