For years people have said “Derek Fisher could walk into a coaching job”. And that’s fair. He was pretty much a player-coach after the Laker years. You could see it when he was in OKC.
Now that he has the job, he firstly needs to secure it and take immediate charge. And that means talking to the media as confidently as you can. He certainly does this in a recent New York Post piece.
“I’m not Phil Jackson, that’s for sure,” Fisher said Friday in Tarrytown. “I am not going to try to be or even pretend to be.
“I’m going to be me and I think I can be me and do it in a way that’s consistent with who we need to be.”
“There will be some boundaries that we have to have within our relationship,” Fisher said. “But at the end of the day Phil is running this department.”
They’re both professionals. As long as Dolan backs off, (Which he has surprisingly) Phil gets his job done and if Fisher coaches well. This team will grow very quickly. Boundaries are key. But having someone to get advice from is important as well.
