Former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder may return to the ring once more. Boxing promoter Frank Warren recently announced that Wilder is looking to fight again in October. He did not specify where Wilder would fight or what network would broadcast the event. However, he did mention that Robert Helenius and Joe Joyce appear to be the most likely candidates to share the ring with him.
“Deontay is fighting in October; he’s coming back, and they’re talking about him fighting [Robert Helenius], and that’ll be in the States,” Warren told TalkSport.
“I’d love to do that fight [between Wilder and Joe Joyce], but [Deontay is] coming off a bad knockout. There’s no doubt about that was a bad knockout against Tyson Fury, who was a tough fight for him.”
Wilder has not fought since last October when suffered a tough knockout loss against lineal heavyweight champion. Since then, several fans and boxing insiders have speculated about his potential retirement. Despite rumors and reports, it appears that Wilder is not done just yet. In fact, he’d like to challenge for a title again one day.
“Derek Chisora? He just edged a split-decision over Kubrat Pulev, no way,” Wilder’s Co-Manager Shelly Finkel told Planet Sport.
“Maybe the winner of Usyk and Joshua. I don’t know what Fury is doing? Maybe if Joshua wins it’s a huge fight in the UK [between those two] – there’s so many intangibles so we’re looking to see what happens in that fight [Usyk and Joshua].”
The winner of next month’s showdown between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk will likely fight Tyson Fury later this year or in the first quarter of 2023. If Fury remains committed to his retirement, the Alabama could potentially become an opponent for the heavyweight chamoion.
