The former Houston Rocket was traded to Denver in the Ty Lawson trade and was always on the bubble in terms of sticking in Denver. The 24 year old has only played one season in the NBA since coming over from Europe. In his rookie season, he averaged 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists per 36 minutes – numbers that will intrigue teams around the league. Papanikolaou is unlikely to be claimed off waivers, but he should have plenty of suitors in free agency. Teams in need some depth at the forward positions will surely consider his services.
The Nuggets’ decision to waive Papanikolaou is likely more based on the financial consequences of keeping him rather than on his performance. Per Stein, by waiving him before his early October deadline, Denver saves $4.8 million off of its payroll – money that can be spent to add depth to positions of greater need.

It will be interesting to see where Papanikolaou lands. A contending team could benefit greatly from adding him to its roster.
