More than a dozen members of Congress and notable political figures are expected to miss the Inauguration of President-Election Donald Trump, including former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, former First Lady Michelle Obama, U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar and Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett. Representatives for Pelosi and Obama elected not to go into detail about their decision not to attend the Inauguration of the Florida transplant, but Crockett told Axios that she will not be in attendance because she doesn’t “think that this is a time for celebration.”
“I don’t think that this is a time for celebration,” Crockett told Axios.
“I think that if we had a traditional Republican where there were disagreements, then, yeah, I would most likely be there. I would feel more obligated to be there, especially as a sitting member of Congress.”
U.S. Representative Delia Ramirez adds that she doesn’t “feel safe coming” into Washington, D.C. with Trump’s supporters in attendance while Congressman Bennie Thompson says he “don’t see the excitement” of seeing the inauguration of “somebody who he said he’s going to lock me up.”
It is not the first time that a notable figure has missed out on the inauguration of an incoming President. Most recently, the former host of The Apprentice elected not to attend the Inauguration of then-President-Elect Joe Biden.
“To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th,” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
However, Trump is expected to attend the ceremony this time around. The 47th Presidential Inauguration is expected to begin at 12 p.m. EST on Monday, January 2025 in Washington, D.C.
