New Orleans Pelicans All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins has offered to pay the costs of Stephon Clark’s funeral, reports the Sacramento Bee. Clark, a black man, was 22 years old when he was shot and killed by Sacramento police.
The police were responding to a 911 call about a man breaking car windows and a glass door. The officers believed Clark was pointing a firearm at them. Clark was unarmed, holding a cell phone. Sacramento PD released video and audio recordings of the killing on their YouTube channel.
Clark’s death has led to mass protesting in Sacramento.
Clark’s family set up a GoFundMe page on Monday to help raise money for funeral and burial expenses. They well surpassed their goal of $50,000; the total has surpassed $62,000. If the report of Cousins’ generosity is true, of course, they won’t need that money for the funeral.
In 2015, Cousins paid for the funeral of 16-year-old Jaulon Clavo, who was shot and killed while in a car with friends.
Cousins was traded to the Pelicans from the Sacramento Kings last season.
Prior to suffering a season-ending Achilles tear, Cousins was averaging 25.2 points to go along with career-high rebound (12.9) and assist (5.4) per-game averages.
