DeMarcus Cousins is one of the fieriest competitors any of us will ever see on a basketball court. The lumbering Kentucky product has never been afraid of anybody and lays it on the line night in and night out. With the vast passion comes the emotions, and it’s fair to say that many across the NBA would agree that Cousins needs to do a better job of keeping them under control.
While it seems that off the court Cousins is a fairly pleasant guy, his technical foul count and antics on the court have surely shone a negative light on Boogie. His reputation as a hothead who frequently loses his cool has certainly resulted in tension between him and the Sacramento Kings front office on multiple occasions.
In a piece released this morning from ESPN, Cousins proceeded to make comments about the NBA and he didn’t hold his tongue on exactly what he though of the association. Following from ESPN’s Kevin Arnovitz:
When told, years later, that it’s standard operating procedure for agencies and teams to send out press releases and take a bow when they perform charitable acts, Cousins responds, “It just shows you how fake this f—ing league is. Everything is about, ‘How can I make myself look good?’ This isn’t a pure-hearted league, and there aren’t a lot of pure-hearted guys. I wasn’t raised that way. My mom would kick my ass if I helped someone across the street and said [handing over his phone], ‘Here, record this.'”
These comments came after Cousins quietly went about his business and donated to a charity in the Chicago area. There’s certainly enough reason for Boogie to be irritated with being vilified. Most of his blow-ups and emotional struggles are cast directly in the spotlight but whenever Cousins impacts or gives back to a community in a positive way, which he does plenty of, it seems to just be swept under the rug.
Throughout his career, it seems as though people have had a tough time relating to the frustrations of DeMarcus Cousins. Talent-wise, Boogie is as special as they come being arguably the single most dominant big in the league today. Hopefully, one of the NBA’s brightest and most talented stars can move forward and begin to mend his damaged relationship with the league.
