The Toronto Raptors suffered a bit of a blow to their depth on Monday. The team announced that backup point guard Delon Wright will be out four months. He underwent arthroscopic surgery in his right shoulder on Monday for a labral tear.
Wright injured his shoulder during Summer League play. It was an unfortunate moment as the sophomore guard was coming into his own. Wright was playing well for the Raptors Summer League team and looked like the leader of the squad.
In his rookie season, Wright played in only 27 games. In the 8.5 minutes played on average during those games, the Utah product put up 3.8 points, 1.1 assists, and 1.4 rebounds. He spent much of the season going back and forth from the Raptors and their D-League affiliate.
Wright was going to have a difficult time cracking the rotation once again. The Raptors have Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan, Terrence Ross, and Cory Joseph playing ahead of him at the guard spots. However, his strong play in the summer could have led to more opportunities to showcase his talents in the NBA.
Unfortunately, Delon Wright will have to wait until around December to do just that. If all goes well, he will be able to become a late-season reinforcement for a team looking to return to the Eastern Conference Finals.
