The “Slam Dunk Contest” puts up the best dunkers from all around the league against each other. The format has changed too many times over the years to count and currently the format is ‘battles’ in which the East goes against the West and a ‘Dunker of the Night’ is selected.
‘Dunk Contests’ In professional basketball date back to the 70’s with the ABA dunk contests. In the NBA though, it started up in 1984 and the first winner was Larry Nance. The Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks are the only franchises with 4 champions for their franchise. Nate Robinson is the only player to win the event three times. Four are two-time winners including Dominique Wilkins, Michael Jordan, Harold Miner and Jason Richardson.
Recent winners besides Nate Robinson include, John Wall, Terrence Ross, Jeremy Evans, Blake Griffin, Dwight Howard and Gerald Green.
Now it’s time to get to the big time throw downs! All teams and setup were picked by some of the Def Pen Sports Staff and one special guest as well based on what they think the format should be!
