
Dee Rees is one of the most underappreciated minds of contemporary film and today, she took the next step in building her brand in film. Over the course of her career, Rees has garnered attention for her work on films such as Bessie and Pariah. In 2017, Dee Rees reached new heights with her critically acclaimed film, Mudbound. Streaming exclusively on Netflix beginning in November of 2017, the Carey Mulligan led film earned nominations at the Academy Awards, SAG Awards and Golden Globes. Building off of the success of Mudbound, Rees and Netflix have reached a deal to begin development of her newest film, Last Thing He Wanted.
Last Thing He Wanted is based on the novel of the same name written by Joan Didion in 1996. The plot focuses on the life of a journalist named Elena McMahon who inherits her father’s business as an arms dealmaker in the midst of a covert government operation. The script for the film will be co-written by Rees and Marco Villalobos with executive producing from Cassian Elwes, Jamin O’Brien, Wayne Godfrey and Robert Jones.
Netflix is excited about the production of Rees newest work. Netflix film group head, Scott Stuber, said, “Dee Rees is an incredibly talented filmmaker who continues to make provocative and entertaining films.” Scott Stuber added, “We are thrilled to continue our relationship with Dee and proud to have her part of the Netflix family.”
