Miami Marlins are all wearing number 16 jerseys tonight to honor their late teammate, Jose Fernandez. The team is just a little over one day removed from learning that young ace Jose Fernandez passed away in a boating accident.
The team cancelled their game Sunday against the Atlanta Braves after learning about the tragedy. On Monday, the team was back on the field facing the New York Mets. Just a few moments after they paid tribute to Fernandez during pregame, something amazing happened.
Dee Gordon, a man who was seen at the Marlins stadium yesterday alone, emotional and paying tribute to Fernandez, quite possibly had the best moment of the MLB season.
Gordon began his at-bat against Bartolo Colon on the right side of the plate to pay tribute to Fernandez. He then switched to his natural left side of the dish and did the unthinkable. The third pitch of the at-bat, he smacked a home run to deep right field. It was Gordon’s first home run of the season.

This is the reason why sports are amazing. This. The emotions from Gordon as he was rounding the bases. Jose meant so much to his teammates and so many other people. Rest in Peace, Jose Fernandez. You will not soon be forgotten.
