For the Phoenix Suns, this summer has marked an offseason full of promise. While they didn’t make any major trades or splashy signings during the free agency period, they still selected one of the prizes of the draft in Josh Jackson with the 4th overall pick.
While Jackson is the marquee name that has Phoenix and NBA fans alike abuzz, their second round pick also has plenty of promise in his own right. Davon Reed played four collegiate seasons at the University of Miami and was selected 32nd overall by Pheonix and played in all six summer league games. However, his rookie debut will have to be made later than expected as the 22-year-old underwent successful surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee. Following from an official NBA press release:
Phoenix Suns guard Davon Reed yesterday underwent a meniscus repair of his left knee. The procedure was performed by Head Team Physician Dr. Tom Carter at Gateway Surgery Center in Phoenix. Reed is expected to return to full basketball activity in approximately four to six months.
A torn meniscus is one of the more serious knee injuries a player can sustain and you certainly have to hope this doesn’t start a trend for Reed’s promising professional career. With Brandon Knight already sidelined for the season with a torn ACL, Reed figured to get some early action in the Suns’ rotation but that will have to wait.
Pheonix is all in on this youth movement and injuries will not help an unproven franchise that is fighting for relevancy in a packed Western Conference. In his four years at Miami, Reed averaged 10.2 points per game to go along with 3.7 rebounds.
