New York Yankees top pitching prospect Luis Severino took the mound last night during baseball’s biggest rivalry on the grandstage of ESPN. While the Boston Red Sox might be headed in the opposite direction of the Yankees, the contempt between the two teams is very real.
Severino had a masterful debut for the Yankees in five innings of work. He allowed two hits and one earned run while striking out seven batters in his MLB debut.
The Dominican pitching prospect was welcomed to the big leagues by Big Papi in the fourth inning when David Ortiz blasted a homerun to deep right field. The Red Sox ended up with a win thanks to the great pitching from knuckleballer Steven Wright.
Wright pitched eight innings, allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out nine batters for the Sox. Severino might have been the big name pitching on Wednesday night but Wright stole the show.
Even before the game, Big Papi called it. Every time he’s on ESPN, he hits a homerun and David Ortiz did just that off Severino.
