Rockets general manager Daryl Morey isn’t the type to mince his words or hide how he is genuinely feeling when regarding his team. The Rockets sit atop the western conference with a 22-8 25-5 (The article originally misstated the Rockets’ record at the time the article was published) record and look to be a legitimate challenger to the reigning NBA champion Warriors.
While appearing as a guest on The Ryen Russillo Show, a program on ESPN radio, Morey detailed his team’s singular focus for this season: taking down Golden State.
Following transcription from RealGM,
It’s the only thing we think about,” Morey said on ESPN Radio’s The Ryen Russillo Show on Thursday. “I think I’m not supposed to say that, but we’re basically obsessed with ‘How do we beat the Warriors?’
After adding Chris Paul to the team this past offseason, Morey will undoubtedly receive some votes for executive of the year. The acquisitions of defensive aces PJ Tucker and Luc Mbah A Moute have done wonders for the Rockets on the defensive end as well.
Houston boasts the best offense in the league in terms of efficiency at 113.6. The Warriors, who have been without the services of All-Star Draymond Green and Stephen Curry for a significant part of December, rank a close second.
Morey is using the failures of his past teams in hopes that it will continue to fuel his team’s ambitions. He is confident, through shrewd roster moves, that he finally cracked the code.
“Last year, the Spurs knocked us off, so we’re very worried about the Spurs. They’re always one step ahead of every organization and guard us better than anyone. But we calculated it — it’s like 90 percent if we’re gonna win a title, we’ve gotta obviously beat the Warriors at some point. So we’re extremely focused on that. A lot of our signings and what we do during the year is based on that.”
