After building a team that ended up as the third best team in the Western Conference, the Houston Rockets have decided to extend their General Manager, Daryl Morey, for another four years, according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.
“‘Daryl has consistently proven to be one of the top minds and innovators in our league,” [Rocket’s Owner, Leslie] Alexander said. ‘I’m thrilled to continue to work with Daryl towards our pursuit of winning another championship for the Rockets, the city of Houston, and our fans all over the world.'”
Daryl Morey had one year left on his contract, and after the year the Rockets had and the NBA draft and free agency coming up, now is the perfect time to make sure they have one of the top GMs in the league under contract for the foreseeable future. Last summer, the were some rumors about Morey’s job security, but Alexander shot those down.
The Rockets have been recently involved in some trade rumors surrounding Patrick Beverly, Ryan Anderson, and Lou Williams. Having Daryl Morey locked in a long-term contract allows him to make moves without worrying about his future with the team.
With the NBA Draft and free agency coming up, Morey and the Rockets are sure to be busy making phone calls and have plenty of decisions to make. They are said to be interested in Paul Millsap, Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, and Kyle Lowry (like most teams), so they could be looking to make a huge splash this summer.
