Morey has high praise for Parsons.
Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey doesn’t have much reason to be in support of Chandler Parsons anymore. Parsons, a former Rocket, signed with the Dallas Mavericks as a restricted free agent before this season. The Texas foes have since instigated a subtle rivalry which made Parsons’ move that much more significant.
But even with Parsons in Dallas, Daryl Morey has a plenty good enough reason to still support him. He simply loves his game. Morey joined “The Afternoon Show with Cowlishaw and Mosley” on KESN-FM 103.3 where he had this to say about Parsons (via The Dallas Morning News):
On what he thinks Chandler Parsons’ ceiling is:
“I don’t think he has a ceiling. I really think he can be one of the top players in the league. He’s on his way. He had one of his best games yesterday [he scored 22 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday], so I do keep track of him. I’m a big fan of Chandler’s. I thought he was a great pickup for Dallas. It was more of a contractual thing that made him not a fit here given some of our goals and some of our other constraints we had of players already on the roster. From my vantage point of what I’ve seen, he’s had a fabulous season. I think he can be a cornerstone for a long time for you guys.”
On if there was any truth that he didn’t have a choice of keeping Parsons based on a deal with his agent once they got Dwight Howard:
“To me, that’s all in the past. We thought Chandler could be a part of our future. Restricted free agency; it doesn’t always work out to where you can keep them.”
Parsons has been the ideal and much needed fit in the wing slot for the Mavericks. His role is more complementary alongside Monta Ellis and Dirk Nowitzki. This is more customary for Parsons. To think that he could be a top player in the league is certainly high praise coming from the GM of his former team.
There’s still time for Parsons to make good on Morey’s claim, especially as he becomes more of the focal point for Dallas as Dirk Nowitzki fades out. But to reach that point he would have to start separating himself pretty soon.
